SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 9, 2024 – Exo®, a medical imaging software and devices company, has been selected as winner of the “Best New Ultrasound Technology Solution” award in the eighth annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program conducted by MedTech Breakthrough, an independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies and products in the global digital health and medical technology market.
Exo was recognized for its full medical imaging ecosystem, which combines imaging, real-time AI and workflow software that provides immediate insights to inform diagnoses and set patients on the right care path. Built and designed for the point of care with the caregiver in mind, Exo is providing the technology that’s making it easier for caregivers to deliver high-quality, efficient care for all.
“Current solutions for medical imaging make it difficult to capture and interpret images, meaning that work is limited to experts, and patients end up going without critical imaging," said Sandeep Akkaraju, CEO and Co-Founder of Exo. “Exo is changing that by providing a simple, affordable medical imaging ecosystem that fits right into a caregiver’s pocket, expanding access to essential imaging capabilities.”
Central to this ecosystem is Exo’s handheld ultrasound device, Exo Iris™, introduced in September of 2023. Powered by Exo’s patented Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (pMUT) chip technology, Iris provides high-performance imaging at a fraction of the size and cost of cart-based systems. The device is as easy to use as a smartphone, and each chip’s unparalleled sensitivity allows caregivers to see deep into the body or track fine structures, giving them the ease and confidence to do their jobs.
Last month, Exo also added to its AI capabilities, announcing the availability of its FDA-cleared cardiac and lung applications on Exo Iris. The new capabilities mean that Exo now has FDA 510k clearances on five different applications, also including bladder, hip and thyroid, with plans to double the number of clearances by 2025. Exo’s AI is trained on over 100,000 images from POCUS exams performed by users in real-world settings, like emergency rooms and critical care units, meaning that Exo’s AI recognizes internal landmarks even on less-than-perfect scans, enabling caregivers to gain the real-time data needed to make informed decisions without requiring lab-quality ultrasounds.
Exo Iris comes equipped with the final element of Exo’s imaging ecosystem, Exo’s workflow solution called Exo Works®. Exo Works allows caregivers to document and review exams in seconds from anywhere. With Exo Works, patient information captured at the point of care can automatically flow throughout the entire medical ecosystem, following patients throughout their care journey. The result is an improved patient experience that also helps caregivers collaborate more effectively and reduce the burden of documentation.
“Exo is ushering in the new age of ultrasound in the medical imaging landscape and creating a powerful ecosystem designed for the point of care. Point of care imaging provides immediate medical answers needed for diagnosis and treatment, but adoption still isn’t widespread because of poor image quality and integration with hospital IT,” said Steve Johansson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough. “Exo is leading the charge of the medical imaging revolution. By obtaining needed medical answers quickly, Exo helps caregivers deliver high-quality, efficient care for all. Exo’s approach to healthcare’s antiquated technology will make healthcare faster, more accessible and more affordable.”
The mission of the MedTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of health and medical technology categories, including Telehealth, Clinical Administration, Patient Engagement, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Virtual Care, Medical Devices, Medical Data & Privacy, and many more. This year’s program attracted thousands of nominations from over 18 different countries throughout the world.
